Each of these ministries seeks to mimic Jesus’ model for disciple making. The Bonhoeffer Project is a little different in that they seek to model Jesus’ method, but as interpreted and applied by Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

All three seek to provide an answer to the challenge of raising the value and practice of disciple making in the local church.

When I reviewed these ministries, three words or categories quickly came to mind: Pragmatic, Strategic and Theological. While each of these ministries contains portions of all three, each one also majors on one of them:
• 3DM is Pragmatic. Their focus is making it work on the ground in local churches in great detail. Plus emphasize the need for being Spirit-led in every aspect of ministry.
• Sonlife is Strategic. It provides a big picture framework for discipleship that allows for more variety of application than 3DM.
• BP is Theological. It is about changing the thinking and practice of clusters of leaders and then hopefully the churches they serve. Far less about how this can or should happen than in the other models.

I recently did a comparison of Mike Breen’s 3DM, Sonlife Ministries (Dann Spader) and the Bonhoeffer Project started by Bill Hull and Brandon Cook. 

I’m going to share the results of that comparison in several posts: One for introductory matters, one for each of the ministries and one by way of conclusion.

Please feel free to offer your feedback and personal experiences with these ministries, as well as others that should be reviewed.

Overview

The introduction gives the purpose of this document, the research process, the metrics being considered and a confession of biases.

Each approach is then summarized, with their respective lists of key websites, books and trainings offered, as well as a summary of notable points utilizing quotes from each ministry’s resources.

There is then a short comparison of the three approaches, highlighting similarities and differences, and suggesting that 3DM is marked by pragmatism, Sonlife by strategy, and Bonhoeffer Project (BP) by theology.

The final section, Conclusions, notes things each would be great at, the gifts they bring to the Body, their Achilles heels, and a summary of each based on the metrics used.

This section, and the document as a whole, ends with a list of residual thoughts and questions.
